Fen Jiu & Zhu Ye Qing 汾酒和竹叶青

Fen Jiu and Zhu Ye Qing are two wines that originated in Taiyuan and are the city's most famous products. Not actually wines at all, these two white spirits are made from sorghum with a pungent and slightly sweet aftertaste.

Shanxi Mature Vinegar 山西老陈醋
Shanxi mature vinegar (Shanxi Lao Chengcu), reputedly originated in 770 BC, and has been called the “best vinegar in the world”. Made from sorghum, peas and barley, the fermentation process lasts for over a year.  It’s world renowned not only for its exquisite taste, but for its ability to prevent high blood pressure and diseases of the skin.  True Shanxi vinegar is always all-natural and chemical-free, and makes a tantalizingly tart addition to many a dish.

Duanmu Inkstone 段亩砚
Inkstones, used long ago as a palate for blending inks, are considered one of the “four treasures of the study”. The quality of the natural materials used to create Duanmu Inkstones has made them popular the country over.  Quarried at Duanmu Mountain 40 kilometers outside of Wutai County, these stones come in black, green and purple, the latter being the most prized for its density.  While black stones are considered too rough and the green too soft, the purple offers the perfect blend of strength and smoothness.

Polished Lacquer Wares 推光漆器
These traditional polished handicrafts are both lovely and waterproof.  Painted with natural scenes of fauna and flora, Taiyuan’s lacquer ware has been around since the Tang Dynasty.  The best place to pick up these delicate yet durable pieces is at the Pingyao Polished Lacquer Factory, located in Pingyao County to the south of Taiyuan City.
