Jinan Embroidery (Lu Xiu) 鲁绣

Jinan or Lu embroidery is a famous local art form, notable for the use of both silk threads and human hair as the media. Traditional Chinese paintings are reproduced with embroidered hair, and come to life on the fabric. Jinan embroidery is one of the oldest recorded styles in the China.

Dough Modeling (Mian Shu) 面塑
This art of forming figurines and small sculptures out of colored dough is a particularly interesting local craft. The dough is made from glutinous rice and wheat flours, and is shaped and textures by hand to end up depicting figures from operas, folk tales and history. The finished product will not deteriorate over time, due to the preservatives in the dough, but should never be eaten.

Wooden Fish Stone (Mu Yu Shi) 木鱼石
This type of stone originates from marine deposits that average at about 550 million years old. The stone always has interesting grain patterns, formed by the layers of sediment that have solidified over time, and when shaped and polished creates beautiful surface patterns. The stone is often used to make tea sets, and is believed to have beneficial effects for health, ranging from preventing high blood pressure and promoting healthy growth in the body. These stem from elements and minerals found in the stone that enter the body through the drinking of tea made in these sets.

Black Pottery (Hei Tao) 黑陶
The stoneware of the Shandong province is some of the oldest in China, dating from ancient times, and is still made in much the same way now as it was then. Traditional skills are integrated with modern technology for firing and other techniques to produce very beautiful pieces that are unique reminders of Jinan.

E Jiao 阿胶
E jiao is a Traditional Chinese Medicinal product that is made into a number of medicines and health foods. It is made from the skin of donkeys and water from the Langxi River. It is believed to improve circulation, enrich the blood, and can help to soothe the fetus. In addition, it is rich in amino acids and calcium.

Persimmons (Da He Shi) 大盒柿
Jinan is well known for the local persimmons, particularly the ‘Big Box’ variety that grow on Qianfo Mountain, and when in season they can be found all over the city, sold from stalls and carts.
