Suzhou Creek Bridge opens fully to traffic
Jan 21, 2009 By eChinacities.com

After a full year renovation, the Henan Road Bridge across Suzhou Creek reopened. The bridge, which was built in 1875, stands to the west of the Sichuan Road Bridge. The project, which started in 2007 with the dismantling of the 100 pillars that held up the entire bridge, added an arch to the already existing two arches and lengthened it by 108 meters and widening it by ten meters giving it six lanes rather than four. This also allows pedestrians to cross on both sides.  The new bridge is part of an ongoing project to widen the north-south Henan Road and will give the bridge much more traffic capacity. The old bridge was able to handle 3,000 vehicles an hour but during the renovations it lowered to 1,200 vehicles an hour.

Many were concerned that the bridge's century-old pillars were too deep under the ground and would affect digging for Metro Line 10.  Now finished, the new bridge is in the exact style as the former bridge in every way including the color of the concrete.
