Stranded Passengers at Shenzhen Airport Cause Havoc, Under Investigation
Apr 03, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Torrential rain in Shenzhen on March 30 and 31 meant that the airport was forced to delay or cancel over 300 flights. This left around 5,000 passengers stranded at the airport, disgruntled and angry. The pot finally boiled over when the crowd began to advance on the check-in counters and information desks. Some people were caught breaking the property of the airlines and blocking other passengers from boarding planes.

China Southern Airlines workers quickly alerted the authorities who arrived on the scene to calm down the crowd and arrest the more unruly customers. The police are currently working with airport security to assess the extent of the damage and come to a conclusion on the fines and/or sentences to be handed out to the offending people.

I was in the Guangzhou airport on 30th Mar waiting for my 6pm flight back to Chongqing. The wait lasted 9 hours due to the weather. I was one of the luckier ones because we finally caught the flight out. During the wait, the stranded passengers grew unruly but wasn't as bad as Shenzhen. Some of them pointed to those planes parked out in the open be directed to fly them home. Honestly, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at their foolishness. I mean, it's not like hailing a cab on the sidewalk. I can understand their frustrations but how is it that they don't understand that there isn't a switch to turn the weather on or off. All the airlines that cancelled flights offered food and hotel accommodation to those affected. I think they've done their part. But the passengers weren't appeased and kept demanding that their plane arrive and pick them up. It really was a sorry sight.
