South Korean MERS Patient Stable, Beijing Airport Screens Passengers for Symptoms

A South Korean man in Guangdong tested positive for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) last week. This is the first case of MERS in China.

The news has prompted wide concern throughout China. The South Korean man is currently being treated in Huizhou, and his vital signs were relatively stable as of yesterday.

The man flew into Hong Kong and crossed the border into Guangdong.

According to South Korean media, the nation recently had two recently MERS deaths and three new infected patients. There is no cure or vaccine for MERS.

Yesterday, temperatures were measured at immigration at the Beijing Capital Airport. Signs were put up to telling passengers to declare any MERS-related travel history, past exposure to MERS and MERS symptoms.

Inspection and Quarantine airport personnel will use infrared thermometers to monitor temperatures at immigration and look for MERS symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath.
