South China has been on high natural disaster alert following several days of torrential rain in the region. From May 13-15, most regions in southern China experienced heavy rainfall reaching 130-170mm, especially southern Guizhou and areas south of the Yangtze River. Areas most likely to be affected by severe rainfall (100-140mm) today and tonight include: southern Guizhou, southern Hunan, central and southern Jiangxi, most parts of Zhejiang and Fuzhou, as well as northwestern Fujian. These areas are also expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy winds.
On May 12, a number of regions in southern China, including Hunan, Guangxi, Jiangxi and Guizhou, experienced severe flooding after rivers burst their banks. An estimated 2 million people have already been affected by these floods, and southern China remains alert to more natural disasters including landslides, mudslides and mountain torrents.
