The Phase III expansion project at the Ningbo Airport is now underway, and the 200 million RMB second terminal should begin construction early next year. When the expansion project is completed, the Ningbo Airport's surface area will be more than three times its original size.

With the existing design of the Ningbo Airport Passenger Terminal Building, it can handle a throughput of 3.8 million passengers per year. But over the past decade, the passenger throughput has known an average annual increase of 15%. In 2010, Ningbo Airport passenger throughput reached 4.52 million passengers, up 12.8% over the previous year. The airport is currently the 33rd most used airport in China. By the end of 2011, passenger throughput is expected to exceed 5 million passengers, and by 2015 it will exceed 7.5 million passengers. Construction on the second terminal is slated to begin in early 2012, and will hopefully be completed by 2015. By then, the Ningbo airport will connect the areas of civil aviation, bus stations, rail transport, public transport and public taxis together as one large transportation hub.
