Shijiazhuang Entertainment Overview

Shijiazhuang Entertainment Overview

Entertainment in Shijiazhuang, like most other metropolitan cities in China, relies heavily on nightclubs, bars and KTVs. The city does offer some unique performing arts such as Hebei Bangzi (clapper opera), Pingju Opera and Wuqiao acrobatics. Performances can be seen in most of the theaters in Shijiazhuang, but because many are only put on during holidays and special occasions, visitors are advised to book seating in advance.

Visitors interested in Beijing Opera head to Hebei Provincial Beijing Opera. Although not a universally popular form of entertainment, this ancient performing art is much loved by locals and opera enthusiasts. Hebei Bangzi Theater began in the late 1950s. It is traditionally a training center for performing artists but its troupes occasionally put on performances. The theater's troupes have been welcomed at various theaters throughout the world.

Shijiazhuang holds two major festivals that celebrate the uniqueness of the city. In April, the city welcomes visitors to come and experience the Zhaozhou Pear Flower Festival in Zhao County, about 30 kms. south of Shijiazhuang. Festivities include art exhibitions and various live performances. In October, Shijiazhuang is host of the China Wuqiao International Circus Festival (CWICF). Carrying on the country's long tradition of circus performing arts, the CWICF showcases unique acrobatic talent from around China and welcomes performers from all around the world to participate in this comprehensive international circus convention. Unfortunately, the festival is only held once every two years, but Wuqiao Acrobatics World offers visitors a chance to see traditional forms of Chinese entertainment all year round. The Lion Dance and magic shows are just a few of the acts performed.
