According to a report from Voice of China’s CNR News, about 600,000 people’s daily lives are negatively affected by Shenzhen’s Xiaping landfill. People have complained to the landfill authorities for years and applied to the courts, but nothing has been done.

According to public reports, Xiaping landfill is Shenzhen’ biggest landfill and handles about 30% of all of Shenzhen’s garbage. It has done so for the past 20 years. However, with the city’s explosive growth, the garbage dump has been overwhelmed and the smell has affected the lives of surrounding residents severely – some lie awake at night because of the smell.

According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Xiaping landfill releases between 1600 and 1800 tons of rubbish into the pipes without treatment every day. The landfill was even named smelliest landfill in history by some unsatisfied residents.
