Shenyang Attractions

The long history of Shenyang was overlooked by many tourists and it was not known as a spot to visit until after its sudden growth in the 1950s. Despite this, most of the attractions date from the Ming Dynasty.

Shenyang Imperial Palace is a miniature replica of the Forbidden City in Beijing, built by Emperor Nurhachi, and architecturally influenced by Tibetan, Han and Manchurian styles. Inside the impressive halls and towers in which the emperor once lived, is a collection of furniture, musical instruments, paintings and weaponry from Shenyang's imperial history. After Emperor Nurhachi's death, he was interred 13 kilometers outside of Shenyang in the Eastern Tomb with his Empress, Xiaoci Gao. 72 devils and the 36 heavenly gods are carved on the steps to the tomb, which have been placed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. The larger complex of the Northern Mausoleum Park, is the resting place of, the Qing Dynasty ruler Huang Taiji and his wife. The area is dotted with marble statues, gardens, paths and lakes on which locals skate in winter.

The modern history of Shenyang is memorialized in various sites around the city: the founder of the Chinese Navy is remembered at the site of his former home: Marshal Zhang's Mansion, while a 10-meter high statue of Chairman Mao is the focal point of Zhongshan Square in the center of Shenyang. Much of Shenyang's culture, and centers on the square, which hosts musical events and soccer matches. The Shenyang ''9.18''History Museum, displays photos, art and videos from the Sino-Japanese War honoring the soldiers and civilians who both suffered and died during the conflict. A longer view of the area's history is explored at the Liaoning Provincial Museum, which has an exhibition of Liao porcelain, calligraphic art, embroidered silks and ancient maps.

Natural attractions around Shenyang include Strange Hill, the unusual topography of which makes objects appear to roll uphill. The Qipan Shan International Scenic Tourist Development Zone has mountains, streams, luscious green trees, hot springs, Fairy Cave and Mother Stone and hosts exhibitions and competitions, from the China Shenyang International Horticultural Exposition, to the Shenyang International Chess Competition. The city also has Youth Park and Zhongshan, famous for its ''Garden within a Garden'': a replica of Suzhou Gardens.

More energetic attractions at the park include the Shenyang Summer Palace Water World, which has pools, slides and several aquatic rides, Shenyang Forest Safari Park, 25 kilometers outside of Shenyang, which breeds rare and endangered species, World Horticulture Expo-Botanical Garden, and the newly opened aquarium, Shenyang Ocean World.
