Shanghai plans to increase the number of charging stations for electric vehicles in the city to more than 210,000 by 2020. It is predicted that the city will have 260,000 electric vehicles by the same year.

At the end of 2015, Shanghai had constructed 21,700 charging stations. 16,500 were built at private residences, and 3,200 were constructed for businesses and enterprises. 800 were built for buses and 1,200 were built as public charging stations.

An official from the Shanghai Transportation Commission said that the city is currently home to 57,000 electric cars, but there are very few public charging stations and distribution is uneven. The number of charging stations in urban areas is still relatively small.

The city plans to construct thousands of new charging stations by 2020. Among the new stations, 175,000 will be designated for private rental by businesses or individuals. 28,000 will be public charging stations, and 7,700 will be used for public transportation and public works vehicles.
