Shanghai – Nanjing Intercity Railway is due to open to traffic on July 1st. To make live up to the promises about shortening travel time between the two cities to under an hour, officials have collaborated with engineers and builders to bring the original speed of 300 km/hr to 350 km/hr (Beijing – Shanghai high-speed railway currently under construction and the Wuhan – Guangzhou high-speed railway currently in use are both designed for the same speed). The intercity railway between Shanghai and Nanjing spans a total of 300 km, traversing through six cities (Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Nanjing). Officials have scheduled to begin test runs of the trains on May 1st, trial operations on June 1st and then open officially for traffic on July 1st.

Shanghai – Nanjing Intercity Railway will also be the first of its kind in the Yangtze River Delta Region to assimilate operations and services just like any other public transit. Much like the metro system, the intercity railway will also have automated ticketing machines installed, where passengers can opt to select and buy tickets at relative ease. There will also be automated gates where passengers can check themselves into the station for boarding.
