Shanghai Hospital Mediation System Helps Deal with Patient Disputes
Jun 24, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The city has introduced a new mediation system for disputes between patients and medical staff in hospitals. The system was implemented in the hope of reducing violence against hospital staff and lengthy and expensive lawsuits.

The mediation is free and can avoid long drawn out litigation. In the first quarter of this year, 855 cases were heard, resulting in settlements worth nearly 25 million RMB.

The system was introduced in August 2011 to try and ease rising tensions between relatives of patients and hospital staff. Violent attacks on medical staff are not uncommon, and were threatening to disrupt the daily workings of the hospitals.
