Shanghai Couple Sell Own Daughter to Purchase an iPhone

Shanghai Couple Sell Own Daughter to Purchase an iPhone

An old saying says it best: everyone loves their own children. Even parents who commit bad deeds don’t harm their own children. However, there is now an exception: a Shanghai couple in their 30’s who sold their own baby daughter for 50,000 RMB. What’s especially aggravating about this is that the couple used this profit to purchase an iPhone and other luxury items like trainers.

A Shanghai couple surnamed Liu and Li met each other online and fell in love. After getting married, the two mostly stayed at home and did not look for work. The two would often depend on aid provided by their extended families to get by.

The couple gave birth to their first baby in 2004. The next year, Li discovered that she was pregnant again for the second time. Although times were tough, the two were allowed to give birth to a second child owing to the fact that the two of them are both single children of the “one child policy”. And so, they decided to have a second child.

In 2012, Li again became “accidentally” pregnant which she then gave birth to in 2013. Because this was considered to be an illegal birth, they weren’t able to keep the baby at their home; that’s how they came up with the idea of “selling the baby for cash” in order to solve their problems.

And so Li would post advertisements for the baby on a Baidu forum. On each post, the baby would have a marked price of 30,000 to 50,000 RMB.

The post was eventually noticed by police authorities in the city of Yangpu. At the same time, the prosecutor’s office began to make a case against the couple for the crimes of human trafficking and child endangerment.

Although the couple argued that they did not sell the child or actively ask a second party to pay a monetary amount for one, the investigator’s office found that a transfer of funds had been made according to bank records; having confirmed that the person who was to “adopt” the child had made a payment at the same time as the transfer of funds, authorities concluded that it was indeed a case of child trafficking.

However, the fact that has proven to be most surprising is a bill statement for a credit card in Li’s name. Immediately upon receiving payment for the sale of their child, the couple went online and purchased an iPhone, sport shoes and other luxury items. Not long after, all the money was spent.

At present, the case is being tried.

So... if they outright killed the child before birth, they'd be just exercising a right to choose and all that, but selling the child, so the child goes to a better (hard to really be worse) family, and they're monsters?

as long as they aren't from america though right. That isn't allowed either. Illegal and legal is really the argument of a scoundrel when the laws are made to punish people just because they can....

The kid would probably have had a better life with the new adoptive parents rather than with these losers. One kind of hopes the child gets to stay with the buyers!
