Shanghai Consumers Can Shop Online for Ikea Furniture Starting End of August

Ikea China announced during their 2017 fiscal year press conference held this afternoon that online shopping for their products will start at the end of August, though this service will temporarily only be available in Shanghai.

Customers can log on to the Ikea China website after the end of August and navigate to the online shopping page by clicking on the shopping cart logo on the right upper corner. Product catalog and prices will be synced in-store and online.

Ikea has already made its products available online in over ten countries across the world. In May of this year, Ikea China had indicated during a press event that they have plans in the latter part of this year to make their products more accessible through several sales channels, one of which includes online orders.

According to Ikea China sales executive Zhu Changlai, they will be using the Ikea official website for online orders at this time and delivery will be provided by the furniture retailer’s suppliers. Ikea China is choosing to launch online shopping in Shanghai only at this time for several reasons. Shanghai is one of the earliest footholds for Ikea in China and there are three stores in the city supported by a mature supply chain and storage network. Ikea China has plans to make the online option available to more cities in China in the near future, though specific schedules are unavailable at this time.

Ikea currently has 20 stores in China, expanding at a steady pace of three new store openings annually in the past two years. For the 2016 fiscal year, Ikea has performed consistently well—having experienced a 20% increase at 83.46 million customers served in stores and cashed 19.4% more in total revenue at 11.7 billion RMB compared to the past year. With the exception of new stores, Ikea has realized double digit growth in sales for their stores for the past five years in a row.
