New Duty Free shopping areas as well as tax refunds on items purchased from certain stores are in the works, as Shanghai authorities hope to attract more visitors from the burgeoning cruise ship tourist sector.

Shanghai Customs officials hope that Shanghai can become a shopping destination for tourists embarking on cruises in the area.

Duty free shops are to be built at the arrivals areas of the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan and the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal on the North Bund in Hongkou, and designated stores will offer tax refunds on purchases over 800 RMB.

Authorities are also toying with the idea of weekend cruises to try and cater to the local tourism market.
