From the night of July 8, many areas in Sichuan province were battered by heavy rainstorms causing severe flooding, landslides, mass evacuations and the crippling of local transport facilities. Some of the worst hit regions included northern parts of the Sichuan-Tibetan Plateau and western Sichuan. However, Chengdu, Deyang, Mianyang and other larger cities were also saturated, with Dujiang alone receiving up to 554.1 mm of rain.

Some 727,000 people have been affected by the storms. In Wulipo, a village in Dujiangyan Zhongxing Township, a landslide is believed to have buried 30-40 people. Quake-stricken zones including Wenchuan have also been severely affected. Three bridges have collapsed there including one in Jiangyou City which has left at least 12 people missing.

Hundreds of flights into Chengdu’s Shuangliu Airport have been cancelled and expressways have been closed. "It is the biggest rainstorm in 50 years in the county. The deepest water in the ruins is 7 meters,” Wang Shoulei, an information officer in Beichuan was quoted as saying.
