Traveling by taxi around Sanya is a viable option for many travelers, who will find the fares quite reasonable. The starting fare in Sanya is 8 RMB, which covers the first 2 kilometers, with additional charges of 2 RMB for each kilometer beyond that.
If the taxi ride is longer than 10 km, passengers will be charged one extra RMB per km after 10 km. If the taxi is waiting in traffic for longer than 5 minutes, passengers will be charged 0.4 RMB a minute after 5 minutes. During the Spring Festival there is an extra 5 RMB charge on all taxi rides.
Many cars do not have a meter, so visitors should have an idea of how far their destination is from the starting point and negotiate the fare in advance to avoid disagreements. Doormen at most hotels will negotiate the fare for you.
