Sanya Entertainment Overview

Most visitors coming to Sanya are looking for a peaceful haven away from their busy city lives. Long days lazing on the beach and afternoons spent taking part in water sports are the most popular forms of entertainment in Sanya. Another way to spend time in Sanya is to sample the seafood for which the city is famous at any of the restaurants lining the seafront. Many bars and restaurants have terraces, from where diners can enjoy tranquil views of white sand and rolling waves along with their food.

The night life in Sanya is like that in many holiday towns, mainly concentrated in restaurants and bars in the downtown area. The city is still mainly geared toward welcoming Chinese tourists, so the busier places are the discos and KTV clubs of which China is especially fond. Many of the larger hotels have their own clubs and bars which are open to their own guests and visitors alike. Dadonghai and Sanya Bay is a sea of neon, where the younger visitors to Sanya rub shoulders with Westerners, listening to DJs spinning western tunes more often than not. The bars vary greatly: some are very up market lounge-bars, and some can only be described as dive-bars. Nevertheless, there is a large selection to choose from and most visitors will find somewhere to their taste. Currently, the most popular bars include New Sun Dancing & Singing Studio and the Sanya Manting Hotel Club.

The natural beauty of Sanya provides ample entertainment for visitors for whom bars are not particularly enticing: Yalong Bay is a beautiful place to watch the sunset and enjoy a relaxing dinner.

The calendar of festivals in Sanya includes several celebrations peculiar to the area. During festival times, the city is very busy. They are vibrant, exciting times, but visitors should be aware that everything from taxi-fares to hotel charges is more expensive during the festivals. The Sanyuesan Festival is celebrated by Li and Miao people on the third day of the third (lunar) month. The festival was traditionally a time for courting couples to celebrate their love together, but it is now a general celebration of the civic values of love and joy for life. The International Wedding Festival is another romantic festival held in Sanya, when couples flock to the city to get married or celebrate their anniversaries.
