Zhongshan Lu Commercial Street 中山路商业街

This historical shopping street flourished as an international district during German occupation in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Officially designated for foreign nationals, businesses run by Germans and Greeks prospered along Zhongshan. When the Japanese, who occupied Qingdao during the 1930's, were defeated, the Chinese named the street after Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan, in Mandarin), who was by then a local folk hero. After the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese government took the area under its wing and transformed it into the contemporary entertainment district it is today. Some remnants of the old stores are still visible along Zhongshan, but are largely overshadowed by modern movie theatres and department stores.

Terrific cinemas, restaurants, and clothing can be found one block north of Taidong Lu. Large department stores along the thoroughfare have everything from fancy perfumes and watches to the latest big name Chinese fashions to every imaginable home appliance. Most of the smaller shops in the area are dedicated to clothing and accessories, and there are more than a few tailors who do traditional and modern outfits. After dark you might find some treasures in the crowded night market, but the array of karaoke outfits and hot pot (huo guo)
