A Norovirus outbreak in Sanya has infected 103 people, with eight reports of the virus occuring in the space of three days, February 7-10.

The patients were all from various tour groups and have suffered from acute gastroenteritis caused by the Norovirus. The patients all displayed similar symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains and diarrhea.

The local department of health conducted an investigation into 6 restaurants that the tourists had eaten in, testing samples of the food but they all came up negative.

According to Chen Zhu, Director of the Center for Disease Control in Sanya, the Norovirus can commonly break out at this time of year as people flock to seaside towns for the holidays.

He urged everyone to pay more attention to personal hygiene when handling food and to avoid uncooked seafood in particular.
