Nine members of the ‘Almighty God’ sect have been imprisoned for distributing materials and trying to recruit other members in Liaoning and Henan province.
Three women in Liaoning received three year sentences for hosting a gathering, and their confession led to the arrest of a fourth who was also sentenced.
In Henan province, one man and four women were also sentenced to three years to six months for distributing materials.
The religion was thrust into the limelight last week when a woman was brutally murdered by six of the cult’s members after refusing to give them her phone number. The act was captured on camera and broadcast across the world, with harsh criticism falling on the people who witnessed the incident, yet failed to intervene.
The religion, started in 1989 by Heilongjiang crackpot Zhao Weishan was banned in 1995 in mainland China, but it has retained a dedicated following ever since.
