Netizens Oppose New Cap on Discounted Cinema Ticket Rates

According to a recent draft proposed by the film administration under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, discount tickets for cinemagoers should not be discounted by more than 30%. This draft particularly affects cinema members and those wishing to buy group tickets or special promotional tickets.

Despite still being under discussion, news of this new ‘discount cap’ proposal instantly ignited fierce debate among the general public and on February 27th, xinhuanet.com conducted a survey in its forum asking netizens how they felt about it. Of the 1258 respondents, 98.6% were opposed to it, while only 1.4% supported the new draft.

So, what’s a reasonable price for a regular cinema ticket? Sina Weibo conducted a survey to find out just that. Of the 11,276 respondents, 65.0% thought tickets should cost less than 30 RMB; 30% chose the 30-60 RMB option; 3.0% chose the 60-80 RMB price range; and 2.0% (for some incomprehensible reason) believed that 80 RMB for one ticket was a reasonable price.
