4,977 Chinese websites were shut down by the government last year and 2.26 million individual illegal user accounts were closed. The National Internet Information Office released these numbers last Thursday. Millions of video and audio files were also deleted.

The severe crackdown focused on websites spreading political rumors and hosting other illegal information.

The State Information Office reported that nearly 1 billion sites were told to rid their pages of pornography, gambling, fraud, false advertising and other illegal information. More than 900,000 illegal user accounts were shut down for these reasons, along with 1,200 illegal websites.

124 fake dating sites, and 140 fake online drug marketplaces were shut down as well.
