National Science Foundation Ranks China 2nd Globally for Science & Engineering
Feb 25, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Chinese science and technology have become increasingly prominent on the global stage, according to the National Science Foundation’s Science and Engineering Indicators (SEI). China was ranked second in the world by the NSF for its science and engineering. China’s capacities for R&D investment, scientific paper output, and high-tech manufacturing helped it clinch this ranking.

Global R&D spending has increased recently in North America, Europe, East Asia and Southeast Asia. The United States has the strongest R&D capacities, followed by China. China now spends almost as much on R&D as the entire European Union.

China accounts for 20 percent of total global R&D expenditure, while the United States accounts for 27 percent. Japan, number three, makes up 10 percent, and Germany accounts for 6 percent.

Spending on R&D in East Asian and Southeast Asian countries is increasing rapidly. From 2003 to 2013, Eastern and Southeastern Asia countries’ R&D spending increased from a 25 percent global share to a 37 percent global share. China and South Korea have both almost doubled their spending on R&D in the past 10 years.

There are two types of R&D funding: funding for applied research, and funding for experimental development. In 2012, 5 percent of China’s R&D funding went to support applied research, and 84 percent went to experimental development. In contrast, 17 percent of R&D funding in the U.S. went to research, while 62 percent went to development.
