Nanjing Railway Stations
Nanjing is a major transport hub for East China. It is the intersection of the National Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai) Railway and Ningtong (Nanjing-Tongchuan) Railway. High-speed trains run direct to major cities all over the country, including Beijing (approximately 4.5 hrs), Shanghai (1.3 hrs), Suzhou (1 hr), Xi'an (11.5 hrs), Hangzhou (3 hrs) and Tianjin (3.5hrs). There are currently no bullet or high-speed trains that go directly to Harbin, therefore journey times are longer than to most destinations: Harbin (28 hrs), Changchun (26 hrs) and Shenyang (24hrs).

The city has two operational train stations, namely Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing South Railway Station.

There are three different ways to book a train ticket in Nanjing: over the phone, online and at the ticket window. Tickets can be purchased over the telephone (9510 5195) up to 4-12 days in advance. Tickets purchased between 6:00-12:00, must be collected on the same day between 12:00-24:00. Tickets booked between 12:00-23:00, must be collected between 0:00-12:00 the following day. Tickets are non transferable and are void if not used on the correct day. To book tickets online, use the site www.12306.cn. Tickets can be reserved daily from 7:00-23:00 up to twelve days in advance.

The main station, Nanjing Railway Station is located in the northern suburbs, near Xuanwu Lake. It also serves as a transfer junction.

Nanjing South Station is located in Yuhuatai District, and mainly serves as a hub for high-speed trains between Nanjing and Beijing as well as Nanjing and Shanghai. The main high-speed train lines here are the Shanghai-Beijing Line, the Shanghai-Wuhan Line, the Ningbo-Hangzhou Line, the Ningbo-Anhui Line, the Nanjing-Nantong Line, as well as many other lines.

Travelers arriving at any of Nanjing's railway stations can get to the city center by taxi for a fare of 20-30 RMB. Buses serve Shanghai Lu (13), the university area, Xinjiekou (1A) and the city center.
