Nanjing Local Food

Nanjing Salted Duck (Nanjing Yanshui Ya) 南京盐水鸭

Only slightly less domestically famed than Peking Duck is Nanjing Salted Duck. Salted duck is tender but not overly oily; according to locals it is best eaten in August, when the meat is traditionally seasoned with osmanthus flowers.

Nanjing Steamed Duck (Shao Ya)烧鸭
Most butcher shops, grocery stores and some restaurants offer tender steamed duck, which is soaked in a dark, sweet and salty sauce before serving.

Eight Delicacies Soup (Qingtang Bazhen) 清汤八珍
Don’t be put off by the ambiguity of its name. Eight Delicacies Soup is a delicious sweet porridge that’s kind on the eye and the palate. Made with fish, water chestnut, lotus root, parsley, arrowroot, and lotus seeds, this dish is eaten most frequently around Autumn Festival.
