More Censorship Coming Soon, This Time to WeChat
May 29, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Yesterday, May 27, marked the first day of a month long offensive by the Chinese censorship authorities on popular messaging service WeChat, or Weixin in Chinese. A spokesperson announced that recently there have been cases of negative or harmful messages being spread on the platform and that the new, stricter censorship is to protect citizens who are unhappy about this.

Individuals should not fear, however, as they are targeting accounts who use the service to communicate messages to large groups of people. The fear is that these accounts have the ability to ‘mobilize society’ and therefore must be controlled. The authorities are also encouraging civilians to call or email in tips against offenders.
