Location and Climate

Beijing lies in the north of the North China Plain, at 39°56′N and 116°20′E. It neighbors Tianjin Municipality (to the east) and Hebei Province (to the north, south and west). Its terrain slopes from the northwest to the southeast while mountains snake around the city's northwest and northeast. The southeast part of the city slopes toward the coast of the Bohai Sea.

Beijing is in a warm temperate zone with a semi-humid climate. It has four distinctive seasons, with short springs and autumns and long summers and winters. Summers are hot and humid, with July maximums of 32C (90F), while in winter, average January maximums are just above freezing, with the mercury dipping as low as -10C (13F) overnight. Owing to the dry winter climate, Beijiing has only a few days of snow each winter. Annual rainfall is around 370mm (14.8 inches), with July and August being by far the wettest months.
