Lenovo Reportedly in Talks to Buy Up Blackberry Ltd.
Oct 18, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Troubled Canadian company Blackberry Ltd. has possibly found a suitor in Lenovo Group Ltd, a Chinese computer manufacturing company. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Chinese company has signed a non-disclosure agreement to be able to look at Blackberry’s books.

Blackberry officially opened its doors to offers in August when chief executive Thorstin Heinz announced the board would be looking for “strategic alternatives”, after years of shrinking profits and falling market shares. While the list of potential buyers is quite long, Lenovo has been discussed as a possibility since March when its chief executive Yang Yuanqing said they might consider purchasing the company as a way of expanding their mobile phone business. Lenovo makes its own line of smart phones but these have really only been successful in China: Blackberry would give them an international presence.

This would not be the first time Lenovo took over parts of a flailing company. Back in 2005 it acquired IBMs computer business, and the laptops are now being sold under the Lenovo brand.

As yet spokespersons from both companies have declined to comment.

I wish companies like Samsung would be buying BB. Nothing against China but it seems like the only reason for this "strategic" move is cold, hard cash, not long term thinking. Bye Bye Blackberry
