Lanzhou Entertainment Overview

Lanzhou offers the visitor an interesting array of evening activities to choose from. Its bar district is located on the bank of the Yellow River. It has romantic cafes, lively bars and discos, cinemas, theaters and food vendors. Meanwhile, crowds gather nightly in the city's parks to participate in traditional Chinese dance and other exercises.

The unique Taiping (Peace) Drum Dance can be seen at the Gansu Provincial Opera House. During the Spring Festival and the Yellow River Cultural Festival, this local performance is also staged in parks and temple grounds.

Like most regions of China Lanzhou has its own local style of opera. Called Long Opera, it is known for its simple melodies and plentiful dialogues. The People's Theater is the place to go to take in a show. Visitors are advised to try to book their seats.

The city also hosts two annual festivals – the Lanzhou China Silk Road Festival and the Lanzhou Peony Festival. The former is aimed at introducing visitors to the old Silk Road, an ancient trade route, while the latter is a celebration of China's national flower.
