Jinan Entertainment Overview

As the capital city of Shandong province, Jinan can offer pleasure seekers more than they might expect. As the economy in Jinan has boomed, karaoke clubs, pubs, bars and coffee shops have sprung up all over town becoming popular with students and white collar workers. Theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys, a golf course and saunas have all opened too, as has a park for extreme sports constituting a reasonably comprehensive menu of leisure activities.

According to a recent survey, Jinan's nightlife is made up of four aspects, which are: Quancheng Square Nightlife; Food Nightlife, focused on roadside stands; Shopping Nightlife, to be experienced at Jinan's markets & department stores, and; Recreational Nightlife which takes place across the city in clubs and dance halls.

At night in Quancheng Square (the main square), you can watch kids compete in in-line skating, karate, or other competitions, smell the flowers sold here, and watch performances of various local art forms.

The Night markets in Jinan cannot be missed. Shunjingjie night market, Daguanyuan night market and Shanshi Donglu Night market offer inexpensive clothes and knickknacks, and provide a bustling view of local life and commerce.

Night life in Jinan takes many forms. Karaoke clubs (KTV) have been fully embraced by Jinan residents as a means to escape the heavy pressures of modern city life. Two of the most popular KTVs are Amigo and Holliday which are both decorated with huge photos of famous stars and supply a free buffet.

For those who like music and dance, the first stops should be West Drink Town and 23 Cinderella club which have good reputations and are popular hang-outs. Bars are also popular in Jinan. Pyramid is a fashionable destination for foreign students and is famous for its delicious pizza. Casablanca is another bar in favor with both locals and visitors. It features bands, sets by local DJs and various performances.

Acrobatic displays are common all over China, but the Jinan acrobatics troupe has a particularly high reputation having won many awards in various domestic and international competitions. Luju opera is a local opera of the Shandong Region. It's relatively young, dating back no more than 60 years, having evolved from the older Shandong Qinshu, but is well regarded for its reflections of daily life. Most of the lyrics are sung in Jinan dialect.

Shandong Kuaishu is a form of Quyi (a performance art involving storytelling through monologues and dialogues), performed in the Shandong dialect by performers. During the performance, performers often make use of expressive eye movements and exaggerated body language and much of the magic relies on their skilful attention to humor and the creation of suspense. The art form is especially suited to relaying heroic stories and descriptions of acrobatic fighting in Chinese operas or dances.

To enjoy regional Shandong performance art, visitors are recommended to visit one of the many tea houses in Jinan. Jinan tea houses are built in a style similar to the famous Laoshe Tea House in Beijing, the most well known being ''Minghu ju Tea House'' on the bank of Daming Lake in Daming Lake Park. It is a Qing styled tea house which has been offering high-caliber performances alongside snacks and refreshments for more than a century. The ''Mingquge Tea House'' in Jinan Grand View Garden features daily performances of Peking opera, or if your Chinese language skills are up to scratch you might like to try the ''Chengguang Tea House'' in Jinan Grand View Garden which is famous for its professional comic dialogue (Xiangsheng) performance.

Jinan has ample opportunities for visitors wishing to spend time in the great outdoors. Thousand Buddha Mountain park has a golf course, cable-car and other popular recreation facilities. Every year a temple fair is held on the Double Ninth Festival (the ninth day of the ninth lunar month), when performances of Peking Opera, acrobatics and martial arts are held.

Jinyunchuan Amusement Park which lies in Licheng District of Jinani is a park built for extreme-sports. Sports including bungee jumping, climbing, gliding and riding unusual canoe-bicycle hybrid water vehicles are all on offer to energetic participants.
