On the night of January 22nd 2010, the Toronto International Film Festival honoured Chinese director Jia Zhangke with the award of world’s ‘director of the decade’. The judging panel consisted of 61 directors, historians and film exhibition curators, jointly assessing ten years of films from the last ten years, as well as the results produced by investment methods.
Born in 1970, Jia has consistently received international praise for his films which are said to depict a changing China in the post-reform era. The judging panel believed that three of Jia’s films “Platform”, “Still Life” and “World” have already become cult status around the world.
