Hohhot Attractions

The sights on offer in Hohhot are those that have been genuinely significant to the local population for centuries. Inner Mongolia's most precious treasure is its long unbroken culture which is why many of the attractions focus on displaying and explaining their traditional ways.

A trip to the grasslands is enchanting no matter how much time you have to spare, but spending a few nights in a yurt, drinking milky tea and listening to your hosts play energetic songs on the Matouqin under a star-filled sky on the Xilamuren or Gegentala Grasslands is an unforgettable experience. Taking part in one of the rituals at a Mongolian Aobao (a huge mound of stones with practical and spiritual significance in Mongolian culture) should be enjoyed if at all possible, when the structures are swathed in white cloth and invited Lamas speak while intricate dances are performed around glowing bonfires.

If a full immersion into Mongolian culture on the grasslands does not appeal, then a trip to the Mongolian Folk Custom Garden takes a more considered approach, displaying a broad history of the Mongolian people and their most revered leader Genghis Khan, alongside demonstrations of traditional food, accommodation and most aspects of daily life.

The three most important events in the Hohhot calendar still revolve around the Mongolian culture. First and foremost, is the annual Nadam Fair which has provided a yearly platform for herdsmen to display their skill at a variety of Mongolian sports and also acts as a market for animals and machinery. The Inner Mongolia International Equestrian Invitational Competition has formalized the games competed over during Nadam, particularly in the ''Men's Three Skills'' of wrestling, horse racing and archery.

Like many Chinese cities, Hohhot has many beautiful temples. Of the 50 or so which are still in good condition, the most noteworthy are the Dazhao Temple, often referred to as the Silver Buddha Temple, thanks to the huge statue inside that was dedicated by the third Dalai Lama. Xilituzhao Palace is the largest Lama temple complex still remaining in Hohhot, featuring the impressive Lama Pagoda which is carved from white marble and stands 15 meters high.

Zhaojun Tomb is considered to have some of the most enchanting views in Hohhot. It is said to be the resting-place of Wang Zhaojun (one of the Four Beauties of ancient China), who is remembered for her sacrifice in leaving the court of the Han Dynasty emperor Yuan to make a strategic marriage with a ruler of a non-Chinese tribe.

The city does of course have modern shops and conveniences. These are mostly concentrated on Zhongshan Xilu where shopping malls are based and the larger local companies have their offices.
