Hangzhou Travel Tips

Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon type climate with four quite distinct seasons; however, most travelers like coming to the city during the warm months, usually spring through autumn. In spring, the city is full of flowers and the weather is ideal, while travelers to Hangzhou in June and July should bear in mind that the city receives almost a quarter of its annual rainfall in those months. Typhoons affect southern China from June to December, but the only effect of these events in Hangzhou is likely to be a bout of heavy rain.

Some domestic visitors come to the area in the winter months for relief from the frigid northern weather, but conditions are not ideal: Hangzhou's winter is humid and cold, and many of the buildings do not have central heating. Bring plenty of warm clothing: you may not need it, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
