Guangzhou Key to Keeping China Ebola-Free

Guangdong authorities have increased regulations on travelers arriving from West Africa, as its large African population and the constantly high level of traffic between the two means Guangzhou is key to keeping China Ebola-free.

The New York Times quoted Dr Peiris, who was at the forefront of Asia’s fight against SARS in 2003, as naming Guangzhou as a major city to have to be at the front line of the fight against Ebola. However, for now, China has not reported on any Ebola cases.

Not only are there a lot of passengers arriving to Guangzhou from West Africa, but many of them are coming into the city via Hong Kong and Qatar. This means authorities will have to be extra vigilant. Trade between the two regions is also high, posing a potential threat if not monitored.

The Guangzhou Custom and Health Administration has established a preventative and monitoring mechanism, employing more doctors at airport to screen passengers coming in from affected areas.
