German police announced Tuesday that a young couple suspected of killing a Chinese student have been arrested in Dessau. Police reported that the suspects are both 20 years old. They have been charged with conspiracy to murder and sexual assault.

Li Yanjie, 25, a student in Dessau, Germany, was last seen on the evening of May 11 when she went out for a jog. When she did not return to her dorm, her classmates called the local police. The Chinese Embassy in Germany quickly got involved by putting pressure on police and contacting Li’s family.

German police searched for Li using helicopters, dogs, and other specialized equipment. On May 13, Li’s body was found in the bushes near the center of Dessau.

Dessau police reported to the Chinese government on May 16 that DNA tests had confirmed that the body found was Li. The German police chief expressed sympathy and gave his condolences to Li’s family.
