GPS Devices to be Installed in Nanchang Taxis

Nanchang officials are beginning the process of installing GPS tracking devices in more than 4,000 taxis throughout the city. Officials hope that the new technology will serve to keep taxi drivers in check as well as better protect drivers and passengers against crimes. It is expected all the devices will have been installed by the middle of September.

The GPS tracking device will be linked with the taximeter, thereby making it impossible for dishonest drivers to rig the meter and cheat passengers. At the GPS control center, one can easily check the tracked vehicles’ routes, time, and speed within 5 minutes of the information feed. It was previously impossible to provide evidence of taxi drivers refusing to take on certain passengers. But now, with the GPS tracking information, if a passenger supplies the time and place the driver refused him, that information can be compared with the GPS-gathered information and determine if the car slowed to 5 km/hr or under but did not completely stop to pick up the passenger.
