Foreigners Have Adopted 20,000 Guangdong Orphans Since 2000

Estimations state that there are currently 25 social welfare institutions in Guangdong which have adopted a total around 40,000 orphans during their time of operation. In 2012, a total of 1,866 domestic orphans were taken in; 800 of which were adopted by foreigners in the same year.

In fact, since orphans were made available to be adopted by foreigners in 2000, there have been a total of 20,000 who have been adopted by non-Chinese. These include children who are often abandoned or disabled.

Most of these children have been adopted by families from the US, Spain, Canada, Sweden, Holland and Australia among a total of 17 countries.
