On April 5, at around 13:00, a two-year old boy slipped and fell in to a pond. Hearing the mother’s cries for help, a young Chinese man named Tang Shanlu jumped into the water and carried the boy back to shore. The boy had stopped breathing and his belly had swollen with water. A Spanish hiker named Pep fortuitously passing by at that moment provided first aid until the boy finally regained consciousness. On May 15, the Suzhou government awarded Pep the title of “Advanced Individual for Heroic Acts” as well as 2,000 RMB, making him the first foreigner in Suzhou to be given such a distinction.
