Forbes’ “World’s Most Powerful People”: Xi Jinping Ranked Third

Forbes magazine recently released its 2013 list of “world’s most powerful people” and Xi Jinping, the Communist Party’s general secretary and the president of the People’s Republic of China, was ranked third, sitting behind Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama, who came first and second respectively. Fourth on the list is Pope Francis, and Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, takes the fifth spot.

This year, of the 72 spots available five were filled by Chinese and one was from Taiwan. Le Keqiang, China’s premier is fourteenth on the list. Hong Kong’s Li Kashing, chairman of Hutchison Whampoa, sits at number 30, while at number 36 is Ding Xuedong, Chairman of China Investment Corp. Terry Gou, the Taiwanese CEO of Hon Hai Precision takes the forty-eighth spot and Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization enjoys the fifty-ninth spot. Rounding up the list at 61 is Robin Li, Founder and CEO of Baidu, who also enjoys the privilege of being one of China richest individuals.
