Dalian Snacks

Dalian Snacks

Of the many various street foods to be had in Dalian, two local snacks dominate. Starchy menzi will fill you up on the go, while corn pancakes with salted fish is a must-try for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in Dalian. Sleeve-fish kebabs and jiaozi are also easily found.

North of Zhongshan Square and east of Victory Square lies Tianjin Walking street, with possibly the highest concentration of stalls and restaurants in the city. Another similar district can be found in Hei Shi Jiao opposite the long-distance bus station.

Men Zi 焖子

This traditional Dalian snack is made from powdered sweet potatoes that are then fried on a flat pan to crisp them. Vendors mix together a seasoning sauce of garlic and sesame, then spread it on before serving. True to Dalian roots, seafood is sometimes added, but those who’d rather go without can forestall vendors before anything fishy is included.

Salted Fish with Corn Pancake (Xianyu Bing'zi) 咸鱼饼子
Fish is baked and salted and served with a crispy corn pancake. Locals will tell you that this was invented by fishermen who could not return home for lunch, and so found it necessary to salt their fish to make them last longer.

Ban Hai Liangfen 拌海凉粉.
This gooey dish is actually edible seaweed that has been harvested from the surface of rocks on the ocean floor. After it has dried, it’s boiled for 8 full hours, shredded, then mixed with parsley and seasonings.
