Chongqing Transport - Boat

Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock
Chongqing sits at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the smaller Jialing River, forming an inland port which has been a major factor in the city's growth. The position of the port makes it possible for central China to receive goods by water and despite the emergence of a comprehensive road network, Chongqing still receives large volumes of water cargo, as well as being the largest passenger port on the Yangtze.

Large numbers of boats and passenger ferries use the river, offering visitors scenic cruises along the Yangtze and the Jialing River to Yichang. Chongqing is considered the best place to start a cruise along the Three Gorges.

Longer boat rides to major cities start in Chongqing too, offering a picturesque way to travel long distances. The passenger boats fall into four categories: the star-rated boat, the foreign tourist boat, the domestic tourist boat and the common passenger boat. The accommodation and services offered by the boats can be quite varied and visitors should be aware that the cheaper options become quite crowded. Visitors should contact the ticket office at Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock for detailed information.

Since 2005, Chongqing does not have regular passenger ships to the middle and lower areas and cities of the Yangtze River. The only exception is a daily ferry at 22:00 to Yichang for 220 RMB. This ferry leaves from the "Chongqing Ferry Terminal", Chaotianmen Port 4 (朝天门四码头). To get there, take bus 112外, 114, 120, 141, 151, 262, 265, 268, 349, 372, 382, 401, 418, 424, 461 or 466. Tickets are available for purchase on-site.
