Chengdu Travel Tips

Chengdu is a popular stop for travelers on their way to Tibet, but many don't realize that a special permit is needed for entry into Tibet. The Tibet permit can be obtained from any of the many travel agents in Chengdu as well as the Tourism Bureau.

Visitors need to provide their passport, a valid Chinese Visa, 2 passport photos and some basic information to obtain their visa. Travelers should note that although the staff in travel agencies are likely to speak some English, those in the Tourism Bureau probably won't, and taking along a Chinese friend will significantly speed up the process.

The seasons in Chengdu are well defined: the winters can be cold in the mountains, summers are warm, and rain is a possibility at any time. Visitors should carry lightweight waterproofs or an umbrella.

The internet cafes in Chengdu are cheap by Western standards, costing around 12 RMB for an hour. However, visitors intending to spend a long time in the area should probably head toward the university, where several internet cafes have sprung up, charging just over a tenth of this. Some cafes in this area such as the Bookworm also offer free WiFi.

Travelers who arrive in Chengdu should pick up a map and those interested in embarking on day or weekend trips outside the city should inquire about the cost of hiring drivers at hotels.

Wuhou District has many dining and accommodation options, and also happens to be home to a number of famous attractions including Wuhou Temple, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Jinsha Ruins and Qingyang Temple.
