Urumqi' s position on the historical Silk Road, in the heart of Xinjiang, gives it a range of interesting and unique things that are for the most part, unavailable in the rest of China. Textiles, embroidery, musical instruments hand-forged knives and Kashgar carpets are all examples of local products available in Urumqi.

Urumqi' s shopping districts reflect the city' s identity as a vibrant modern economy with an ancient past. Gleaming shopping malls and supermarkets stand within a stone' s throw of markets and bazaars as old as the city itself. The largest bazaar in Urumqi is the Erdaoqiao Market. Erdaoqiao carries an array of goods, ranging from fresh local produce like grapes, melons, almonds and figs, to household necessities like pots and pans (all handmade locally), to carpets and souvenirs. Erdaoqiao is in the heart of Urumqi' s Uygur district, on Jiefang Nan Lu, which is also home to a large concentration of the city' s mosques. The area abounds with small shops and stalls, as well as larger stores. Hungry shoppers will also have the opportunity to buy a range of tasty Xinjiang snacks. There are also places to shop for antiques, with plenty of distinctive Uygur handicrafts on display.

Like most large centers in China, big shopping centers and department stores have been on the rise in Urumqi. Though these stores are convenient and offer a consistent range of goods, they absolutely cannot compete with the traditional bazaar culture that exists in the city. It is too strongly loved by local people and visitors alike.
