Brief Intro to Shenyang Shopping

The capital of Liaoning province, Shenyang is a large center of 7.2 million people, with a lot of products available. In Shenyang and the surrounding region there are a few local products and handicrafts, and the highlights among these are paintings made with feathers, small stone mosaics and Chen Niang ''wine'', a strong grain liquor.

As a large Chinese city, there are a number of large, busy shopping centers and department stores. Most of these are found clustered together in commercial areas of the city, the most famous of which is Taiyuan Street. Taiyuan is busy day and night, and has a number of Western shops and restaurants, like a Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut, both popular with expats and local Chinese alike.

If you are in search of a more 'real' Chinese shopping experience, however, head to one of the numerous markets in Shenyang. The Wu Ai market is your source for clothing and accessories, and the South Tower Shoe Market for shoes: larger (Western) sizes can be found here without too much trouble, though be prepared to bargain hard at all the local markets.

As far as Western foods and other luxuries, some items can be found at places like Wal-Mart or METRO, though if you are looking for specialty cheeses, wines or foods, or anything that can't be found in Shenyang, it might be worth a daytrip to nearby Dalian, Tianjin or Beijing, all of which have large foreign populations. These cities all have numerous large and small foreign grocery stores that carry a wide range of goods from Australia, North America and Europe.

Shenyang is an interesting place to find antiques. There are a number of specialized antique markets (no less than five of which are listed below) that sell a range of different antiques from furniture and art to books, jade and coins. Even if you don't have a particular interest in collecting specific things, these markets are worth a look for interesting one-of-a-kind souvenirs or gifts.

There is no shortage of interesting venues for shopping in Shenyang, and there are shops that cater to all tastes, from simple to extravagant.
