Shenyang cuisine is typically classified as Shandong cuisine, which originated in China's northeast during the Yuan Dynasty over 700 years ago. It is largely influenced by the culinary prowess of the Manchu, and incorporates elements of surrounding Japan, Korea and Russia. Salt, oil, vinegar and soy sauce are the main flavorings used, and starches of all varieties (noodles, steamed breads, flat breads and rice) are considered a necessity.

The Man-Han Banquet is a set of dishes distinctively Shenyang, and shouldn't be missed while in the city. Jiaozi (dumplings), widely known as ''wontons'' abroad, are a classic Shandong dish. Jiaozi are boiled rather than fried, and can be stuffed to order with nearly any imaginable filling, the most well-known being pork and cabbage, but corn, shrimp, beef, and egg are among the other numerous choices.

Korean fashions and culture prevail on this vibrant entertainment strip. Take in some traditional Korean Pansori (sing-song story telling accompanied by drums) performances and folk dances while you dine, or head out to a hip-hop night club. Shopping, dining and karaoke establishments abound, while public courtyards and parks make nice places to sit outside during the summer months.
