Brief Intro to Guangzhou Dining

The Chinese have a saying that the people of Guangzhou eat everything under the sun. While this is an exaggeration, the people of Guangzhou do enjoy eating exotic foods, and the area does boast a wide variety of delicacies and special local dishes.

Guangzhou is dominated by Cantonese cuisine. This cuisine is well known the world over for its fragrance, taste, and presentation, and along with Sichuan cuisine, is the Chinese cooking style that is most widely-known outside China. Thousands of restaurants in Guangzhou compete for your patronage. At first glance, you may not feel that the sanitary standards in some of the smaller restaurants are exactly "five-star"; however, such generalizations are misleading, since at times, the small restaurants favored by locals may actually offer better quality and be cleaner than more expensive places where you can't see the kitchen.

Yue Cai (Cantonese Cuisine) includes Guangzhou dishes, Chaozhou dishes, and Dongjiang dishes, and enjoys great popularity all over the country. Guangzhou cuisine uses a wide range of ingredients, but uses spices sparingly. Unlike some other Chinese cuisines, Guangzhou dishes don't use thick sauces to mask authentic flavors. Famous dishes of Guangzhou cuisine include: Taiye Chicken (Taiye Ji); Roast Goose; Bai Yun Sweet & Sour Pork Kidney; and Sweet Baked Pork with Honey Sauce. Guangzhou is particularly famous for the tasty little Cantonese dishes known around the world as Dim Sum-simple, delicious and filling!
