Beijing Battle Against Fun: Kongming Lantern Ban Following Happy Valley Halloween Incident

Beijing Battle Against Fun: Kongming Lantern Ban Following Happy Valley Halloween Incident

As if Beijing hasn’t banned enough fun, it has come up with a new regulation: Kongming lanterns (the ones that are like tiny hot air balloons and fuelled by candles) are now no longer permitted, Ecns reports.

The ban follows an incident at Happy Valley during the Halloween weekend, where things got really spooky when a lantern fell onto a telegraph pole and nearly ignited the electric wires. Thankfully nobody was hurt, and Happy Valley will be continuing their Halloween festivities until November 16.

Lighting off Kongming lanterns can threaten tall buildings, trees, power lines and even aircrafts, the report states. From now on, any person or organisation will be held liable for damage caused by the lanterns, and potentially prosecuted criminally if the consequences are very serious.

This ban follows a list of other odd bans; the chuanr-b-que earlier this year, Halloween costumes on the subway, and the lanterns on Guijie that everybody liked so much.

Actually a good idea to ban it. It is a danger and there is no purpose.
