On March 10, the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Department received various reports that a shower of “coal rain” hit the city’s Banshan National Forest Park that day, turning many of the flowers and trees in the park black. The department was unable to decipher what the actual source of the coal was, though section chief Li Junlei stated that they are “ruling out the possibility of illegal pollution activity.”
According to some sources, there was a large fire in neighbouring city Fuyang which burned for over 20 hours. Li stated “we can’t rule out the possibility that the “coal rain” seen at Banshan National Forest Park was blown over from the fire at Fuyang.” Experts however have stated that if this was the case, then it would have been impossible that the ash blown over from the fire at Fuyang would only have shrouded the park.
